The Cambrian Explosion

Fossils of simple multicellular organisms – including algae and bacteria – begin to appear in the fossil record. These are the earliest known fossils of organisms with organelles, the cellular structures that perform different functions and provide energy for the cell.

Eukaryotic cells develop, originating from prokaryotic cells that engulfed simple cell structures (organelles). These later became mitochondria, which provide the energy that eukaryotic cells need to function. Eukaryotic cells form the first true multicellular organisms – the Ediacaran biota.

During this time, the four-limbed tetrapods gradually gain adaptations that will allow them to occupy a terrestrial life-habit. This period is marked by major extinctions of pseudosuchians, the last gasps of giant lizards and amphibians, the first fossils of modern birds, and the emergence of dinosaurs.

The massive Triassic/Jurassic extinction causes the final collapse of most non-avian dinosaur groups and the rise of small ornithischian dinosaurs, pterosaurs, crocodiles, alligators, and sauropods. This period also sees diversification in cold-tolerant ostracods, eurypterids, tubulipore bryozoans, and coral reefs.

In the Mesozoic, four-limbed tetrapods dominate terrestrial habitats; the earliest mammals emerge from small-sized cynodonts. The first seed-bearing Gymnosperm forests grow on land; herbivores adapt to a plant-based diet and grow to large sizes to be able to digest the nutrient-poor plants.

The last dinosaurs disappear; a genetic bottleneck in the ancestor of humans (Homo habilis) dies out; and anatomically modern humans appear in Africa. In addition, Gigantopithecus goes extinct in Asia. The first saber-toothed cats, genus Panthera, appear in the fossil record, as do thylacinid marsupials and glyptodonts. The modern saber-toothed cat, Panthera leo, is thought to be a descendant of the ancient thylacinid. The earliest modern birds, the genus Corythaemus, appear in the fossil record. The earliest giraffes and bony fishes appear as well.
